What ෯ means
It means nine in the historical Sinhala Lith system. One study tentatively dates the system's Sri Lankan origin to the 8th–9th century. Lith numerals served horoscopes and planetary calculations, and researchers also found them numbering some palm-leaf books. An early form of nine used Sinhala letter ණ; a later one used letter න with vowel marks. The separate Sinhala Illakkam system served ordinary calculations and is traced to Brahmi, an ancient Indian script whose numerals appear in Sri Lankan rock inscriptions dated AD 200–400. Sinhala Illakkam lacked zero; Lith had a zero placeholder.
