What ෭ means
It is the Lith Illakkam sign for seven. The numerals appear in horoscope calculations and planetary positions, as well as page numbers and manuscripts on local medicine.
Where did Sinhala Lith Illakkam come from?
It grew from Brahmi-derived numeral traditions in Sri Lanka. Brahmi was an ancient South Asian writing system. Astrological writing on ola leaves—palm leaves prepared as manuscript pages—from the 17th–early 18th centuries documents the system in use.
Sinhala Illakkam was non-positional: its signs represented values on their own. Lith Illakkam instead used decimal place value, where a digit’s position changes its value, and zero as a placeholder. Manuscript forms vary, so historical samples may not match this exact printed glyph.

1Why does ෭ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
