What ෬ means

It is the digit six in Lith Illakkam.

Lith Illakkam is a historical Sinhala numeral system. It is decimal and positional: ෬ contributes six in the ones place, sixty in the tens place, and so on. It was used for calculation, especially to record planetary positions in horoscopes.

The numeral systems changed; six stayed six.

Early Sri Lankan rock inscriptions include numeral signs resembling those in Brahmi, an early South Asian script, including a sign for six. Later palm-leaf manuscripts show Lith Illakkam in specialist use.

The system remained in astrological work into the 20th century. Western digits gradually displaced traditional numeral systems during the colonial period. A 2025 study of Sri Lankan palm-leaf manuscripts found Lith Illakkam mainly in astrology, with some use in Sinhala medicine.

Someone sent me ෬—what does it mean?

Read it as six; the surrounding notation may make it specialist.

A reader familiar with astrology or palm-leaf manuscripts may recognize Lith Illakkam; a general modern reader may not. Unicode 17.0 describes Western digits, 0–9, as the usual numerals in modern Sinhala writing, so ෬ in a chat can look like a deliberate historical reference.

Historical and specialist; in everyday messages it can read as a deliberate reference to older Sinhala numerals.

Without a numeral context, a recipient may see a stray glyph rather than six.

Questions people ask

2

Why does ෬ look like a letter?

Lith Illakkam uses forms drawn in the Sinhala script, so some digits resemble Sinhala letters or vowel signs. The shape does not change its role as a numeral.

Why is ෬ a box?

Your font may lack Sinhala support. Try a font that includes Sinhala; fonts can draw the glyph differently because Unicode’s chart shape is an example, not a required design.
