What ໖ means
On its own, it means six.
In a Lao numeral, position sets place value: ໑໖ means sixteen; ໖໐ means sixty.
Modern Lao writing took shape after small Lao kingdoms united in the 14th century. Lan Xang, the new kingdom, commissioned scholars to devise a script, probably modeled on Old Khmer, itself based on Mon scripts. Related Tham script traditions were used for religious writing in the region. A bilingual Tham inscription dates to 1376; a Tham Lao manuscript in Pali, a language used in Buddhist texts, dates to 1520. These dates belong to script traditions, not to ໖. Lao palm-leaf manuscripts could number leaves with consonants paired with short or long vowels instead of ordinary digits.
