Thai Digit Seven

83/87

๗ is the Thai 7: it represents seven in Thai-script writing. It appears in numbers, dates, years, and document references; the surrounding text tells you what kind of number you are reading. In formal or official contexts, Thai digits can make writing feel deliberately Thai-marked.

Text symbol

What ๗ means

๗ stands for the number seven. In Thai writing, read it as seven unless the surrounding words place it in a date, year, or identifying number.

A font draws it as text, so its curves and stroke weight can vary between typefaces while its value stays seven.

Where did Thai numerals come from?

Thai numerals developed from older regional numeral forms. Early inscriptions in present-day Thailand used Pallava-like writing, an older South Asian script. Later stages include post-Pallava forms and Old Mon and Old Khmer scripts, followed by forms used in Sukhothai, an early Thai kingdom. A Thai Fine Arts Department account dates an early numeral inscription at Noen Sa Bua to 1262. It traces today's Thai digits to ancient Khmer numerals that changed over time; Ramkhamhaeng's association with the Thai script does not mean he invented these digits.

Thai numerals recorded dates and counts. Stone inscriptions from Sukhothai preserve era names, zodiac years, lunar months, days, and religious observances. In government guidance discussed in 2021, Thai digits were promoted as a marker of cultural identity; Arabic digits remained an option for financial work, numeric analysis, and foreign-language use.

The value is neutral; Thai digits can make writing feel formal, official, or deliberately Thai-marked.

In a date or reference number, read the full field before reading ๗ alone.

Questions people ask

2

Is ๗ the same as 7?

They both stand for seven, but they are separate characters from different numeral sets. Substituting one for the other changes the script, not the number.

Why does ๗ look different across apps?

Fonts draw text characters differently, so the curves or stroke weight can change while the value stays the same.
