What is the history of Khmer 7?
The numerals served practical record-keeping. Khmer decimal notation is attested in the 7th century. Inscriptions used numbers to record dates and temple endowments; one stone inscription, the Sambaur pillar, is dated 683 CE.
The value seven appears in pre-Angkorian inscriptions before the later form pram pi. Records from the Angkorian period show prāṃvyl; post-Angkorian records show prāṃbīra and prāṃbila. These older Khmer forms are written here in Latin letters; pram pi combines Khmer words for five and two.
The Khmer, Thai, and Lao scripts all descend from Brahmi, an ancient South Indian writing system, and developed as distinct scripts.
