Sora Sompeng letter Yah

13/35

𑃜 is the Sora Sompeng letter for the y sound at the start of English “yes.” It is read as part of a Sora word. Its consonants carry a short built-in vowel that may be left silent in clusters, even though the spelling has no mark for that change.

What 𑃜 means

It marks the y sound at the start of “yes.” A Sora Sompeng consonant normally carries a short, unstressed vowel of its own. In a cluster, that vowel may be silent, but the spelling has no mark to show where; readers use their knowledge of the Sora word.

Why was Sora Sompeng created?

It gave Sora a script for writing its own language. Mangei Gomango devised Sora Sompeng in 1936. A founding account says its 24 letters appeared to him in a vision, and the script became part of a wider cultural effort linked to the Mattar Banom Damri religious movement. Sora had also been written with Latin, Odia and Telugu letters, and with a spelling system based on the International Phonetic Alphabet, a way to write speech sounds used by missionary linguists.

A 1999 proposal described its use in primary and adult education; a 2009 revision described religious use and printed materials.

Is Sora Sompeng related to Ol Chiki?

Only through the Munda languages they serve. Sora Sompeng writes Sora; Ol Chiki writes Santali, and Varang Kshiti writes Ho. The connection is their language family, not a shared letterform: 𑃜 belongs to Sora Sompeng.
