square era name taisyou

Taishō Era Ligature

126/256

㍽ is the compact, one-character form of 大正, Japan’s Taishō era name. Japanese dates use it to fit both kanji in one square cell.

Text symbol

What ㍽ means

It packs 大正 into one square cell. Japanese printers used ligatures—single characters combining two kanji—to save space in square character frames.

Computer date fields kept the compact form. ㍽15年 means Taishō year 15. The era ran 1912-07-30 to 1926-12-24. Japanese maker NEC added it to its JIPS character set after Japan’s first JIS character standard (JIS C 6226-1978) and before 1983. Some vertical fonts stack 大 above 正; support varies.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ㍽ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
