square gal

Square Gal

㏿ is the boxed form of the gal unit for acceleration; one gal equals 1 cm/s². Japanese earthquake measurements use gal to report acceleration; seismic intensity is a separate rating. The unit name comes from Galileo's first syllable.

What ㏿ means

It marks acceleration measured in gals.

One gal equals 1 cm/s²; technical references also write the unit symbol as Gal.

Japan's Meteorological Agency uses gal for measured earthquake acceleration and cautions that peak acceleration alone does not determine seismic intensity. A 1914 note says seismologist Wiechert used gal in a 1909 report for Göttingen's earthquake station in Germany; it links the unit name to the first syllable of Italian astronomer Galileo. Unicode's East Asian compatibility mapping spells this box as lowercase gal.

gal In English, gal is also an informal word for a woman; here it labels an acceleration unit.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ㏿ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
