Square KB

134/256

㎅ is “KB” (kilobyte) in one fullwidth cell, as wide as a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean character. It fits Latin unit letters into East Asian text; the box does not distinguish 1,000 from 1,024 bytes.

Text symbol

What ㎅ means

It represents KB; the square is only a layout form.

It let a Latin abbreviation fit one character position beside Chinese, Japanese, or Korean text. The MacJapanese mapping, an older encoding for Japanese text, includes it; Unicode retained it for compatibility.

Compatibility text conversion (NFKC) can turn ㎅ into plain “KB,” dropping its frame.

A legacy fullwidth unit form for East Asian text.

Questions people ask

1

Does ㎅ mean 1,000 or 1,024 bytes?

Neither by itself: KB has been used for both. Use kB for 1,000 bytes or KiB for 1,024 when the distinction matters.
