What ㏑ means
It is a text frame, not a mathematical power. That lets the two-letter ln occupy one East Asian character cell.
The history of square ln belongs to a larger family of boxed Latin abbreviations associated mostly with older Korean character standards. Japanese boxed katakana and Chinese telegraph signs are related formats, but belong to different subgroups. Unicode included ㏑ in Unicode 1.1 in 1993; that dates its digital encoding, not when the boxed form began.
Compatibility normalization can replace ㏑ with the two ordinary letters ln. The encoded text changes, but the notation still denotes the natural logarithm.

1Why does ㏑ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
