What 🈩 means
Because in Japanese, first base is 一塁, literally “one base”. Japanese lineups often shorten each position to one character, such as 一 for first base, 二 for second and 捕 for catcher, so 一 beside a name marks the first baseman. Official scorebooks use position numbers instead, where first base is 3.
The boxed versions come from ARIB STD-B24, the character standard for Japanese digital television set by the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses, where they sit among symbols for broadcast text. Unicode took them over so broadcast text could be stored and exchanged without losing them.
In ordinary Japanese or Chinese writing, a boxed 一 is not a normal way to write the number one, so outside baseball it has no settled meaning of its own.
A neutral, technical broadcast mark; it carries no tone of its own.
