What 🅍 means
It labels a surround-stereo broadcasting service.
ARIB, Japan’s radio and television standards association, used SS for that audio service in its digital-TV character set. The square turns the two letters into a compact broadcast label.
By 2007, a Japanese TV-symbol proposal lists an earlier ARIB private-use code for the surround-stereo mark. Private-use means a code assigned within one system, which required a matching character map; Unicode later standardized the same boxed label.
Why can normalization remove the square?
NFKC normalization turns it into plain SS.
NFKC is Unicode’s compatibility text normalization: it simplifies certain forms for matching. Applied to 🅍, it drops the frame and leaves the two capital letters, so the broadcast-label cue disappears.
Technical in a TV listing; the isolated initials have a politically charged reading in German-language contexts.
In an unexplained German-language message, SS can mean the Nazi party’s paramilitary Schutzstaffel; keep 🅍 in clear TV context.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 🅍 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
