What ⸼ means
It marks the end of a shorthand sentence.
Steno, or shorthand, uses compact marks to write speech quickly. This stop marks a sentence boundary where a dot may already stand for a letter or word.
Greek shorthand is attested by the 4th century BCE. Pitman’s system spread in the 1830s; Émile Duployé published Duployan in 1860, a system adapted across languages. In Duployan, the mark replaces an ordinary period; one Pitman proposal uses it to show how a shorthand form should appear, while keeping a separate sentence stop.
Specialist shorthand punctuation.
A decorative use can make ordinary writing look like shorthand.
