Eko was among Jentich’s original letters; later users expanded the set, including a letter borrowed from the Limbu script.
Why can Eko take a colon?
A colon after Eko marks a long e. The original spelling did not distinguish short and long vowels, so this letter covered both. The length mark was introduced around the turn of the 21st century; it is written after the vowel as in :.
There is no single spelling standard as of April 2026. Nepal’s Hamso magazine uses an alphabetic model and promotes stress and tone marks. The Sikkim Herald uses an abugida-like model, where consonants imply a short vowel; it may leave that vowel unwritten after a consonant and does not mark tone. Eko writes e in either convention.
It is an ordinary letter in Sunuwar writing; elsewhere, it reads as a specialist script character.
