It can represent d or a curled-back d sound. The Sunuwar letter devi covered both in the original spelling; retroflex means the tongue tip curls back. Later writing added the Sunuwar letter donga to mark the curled-back sound more precisely.
Jentich created the modern Sunuwar alphabet in 1942 to write the Sunuwar language; community histories in it date from the 1940s. By the turn of the 21st century, Lal Shyakarelu Rapacha and other users had expanded the original 22-letter core.
Why can this Sunuwar letter read or render differently?
Regional spelling and font encoding can change the result.
Unicode 16.0's 2024 description distinguishes the regional conventions: in Nepal, consonant letters have no built-in vowel; in Sikkim, they normally carry a short, unstressed vowel that a mark can suppress. This can give the same consonant a short extra vowel in Sikkimese spelling.
The 2021 Unicode proposal documents older publication fonts that put Sunuwar-shaped glyphs on Latin letters. A page could look like Sunuwar while its stored text was Latin, so its printed shape did not mean the text contained Sunuwar characters.
