Sunuwar Letter Reu

5/44

𑯄 is Reu, a Sunuwar consonant letter whose sounds range from an r to r- and l-like sounds made with the tongue tip curled back. It appears inside ordinary Sunuwar words. Nepalese and Sikkim spelling traditions can write a medial r differently.

Text symbol

What 𑯄 means

It marks a consonant with several documented sound values. These are /r/, /ɽ/, and /ɭ/: an r sound, a retroflex r, and a retroflex l. “Retroflex” means the tongue tip curls back. Latin r is a rough guide; the surrounding word and spelling convention help determine the reading.

Why do Sunuwar spellings differ between Nepal and Sikkim?

The two conventions can place medial r differently. In Nepalese orthography, Reu can follow the first consonant of a syllable to mark medial r. In Sikkim materials, a combining mark under that consonant can do the same job. The spelling changes, while the r element remains part of the word.

Sunuwar spelling also mixes alphabetic and abugida-style features. In the Nepalese system, Hamso remains a letter; some Sikkim Herald conventions suppress an inherent vowel. These differences belong to the surrounding spelling system, not to a change in Reu's role.

Who created the Sunuwar script?

Krishna Bahadur Jentich developed the script in 1942. He created it to write Sunuwar, and Reu belonged to its original set of 22 letters. Later users added letters and diacritics, marks added to letters, so the script continued to develop.

The 2021 proposal describes Sunuwar as having no genetic relationship to other writing systems, although its structure was modeled on Latin and some letter shapes look Latin-inspired. Sunuwar is a Kiranti language, a group that also includes Limbu, Yakkha, and Rai; that linguistic link is distinct from the script's history. The script appears in primers, poetry, histories, newspapers, grammars, government records, and academic work.

A specialist letter for writing Sunuwar; its pronunciation depends on the word and spelling convention.

Do not substitute it for every r; Sunuwar's sound values and spelling conventions vary.
