What ܟ means
Kaph writes k; a dot below can mark a rougher sound.
The above-dot qushshaya marks hard k; below-dot rukkakha marks rough kh. Without points, the word and Syriac reading tradition guide pronunciation.
Syriac script’s origin is debated: it may share a Seleucid-era source with Palmyrene, another Aramaic script, or reflect northern Mesopotamian influence. Distinct Syriac writing appears at Birecik (6 CE); an inscription at Serrin (73 CE) is the second-oldest datable one. Cursive served documents, including a Dura-Europos sale record; Estrangela appears in manuscripts, and Serto grew from cursive. Syriac writing carried Christian texts and was adapted for Arabic in Syriac letters (Garshuni), Sogdian, and Malayalam. Syriac kaph varies by font and style; joining changes its shape.

Questions people ask
1Why does ܟ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
