What ܠ means
It marks the consonant sound heard at the start of “lamp.”
Lamadh is used inside Syriac words. Shown on its own, ܠ is a single letter, not a complete word or message.
Syriac script is attested at Birecik in 6 CE. Syriac writing also appeared in everyday records: a surviving Dura Europos parchment is a bill of sale. Syriac later became an important language for Christian literature.
Why does Lamadh look different?
Its identity stays the same while its drawn form changes.
The first dated Syriac manuscript showing regular Estrangela is from 411 CE. West Syriac Serto and East Syriac traditions developed other writing styles, each with its own letter shapes.
Lamadh joins to letters on both sides, so its form within a word changes with its neighbors. Font and Syriac writing style also affect how the same character looks.

Questions people ask
1Why does ܠ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
