What ௵ means
Read it as a marker meaning “year”. It belongs to Tamil, a language used especially in southern India and Sri Lanka. Varudam names the sign; varusham and aandu are also Tamil words for year.
Look for the accompanying year number or name to find out which year is meant. Tamil has separate signs for day and month, so ௵ identifies just one part of the date.
This is a written date convention: the day, month and year signs occur in Tamil accounting records, newspapers and almanacs—publications containing calendars and related information. Their use predates computer encoding.
A practical date marker, associated with calendars and written records.
