How did the Tangsa alphabet develop?
Lakhum Mossang began it in 1990 to write his Muishvung variety. Muishvung is the variety’s own name; Mossang is a name used by others. He taught the alphabet in small handwritten classes and used it for songs, prayers, and everyday records to support literacy and protect local culture.
Early use was mainly handwritten until around 2012. The Tangsa Script Development Committee, formed in 2019, revised the alphabet to cover more varieties and promoted it publicly in January 2020. By 2021, active use was still centered on Muishvung. By 2021, the alphabet was described as an independent design, not adapted from an older script.
