tangut component-011

Tangut component 011

11/768

𘠊 is a structural piece used to index and describe larger Tangut characters; it has no standalone translation as a word. You encounter components in Tangut dictionaries and in compact formulas that show how a character is built. “Component 011” is a catalog label, not an old Tangut name or a pronunciation.

What 𘠊 means

It is a Tangut character component, not a standalone word.

Scholars use 𘠊 to index and describe the structure of larger Tangut characters. The surrounding character supplies the reading and meaning; the component’s catalog number supplies neither.

An early proposal called it Tangut Radical R0011. Unicode’s component list brings together several scholarly catalog systems, so 011 is an inventory label, not an old Tangut name. The component can also appear in an Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS), a compact formula showing how parts fit together in a larger character; the formula describes structure, not reading.

When was the Tangut script used?

Tangut writing is attested from about 1036 to 1502. The Tangut, also called Xixia, script was made to write the Tangut language and served the Western Xia state in government, diplomacy across languages, Buddhist translation, and block printing.

The script continued after the state fell. Chinese writing influenced it, but Tangut is a distinct script; visual resemblance does not give 𘠊 a Chinese reading. The Sea of Characters, a Tangut dictionary, analyzes larger characters through their parts. The same component can suggest meaning in one character and sound in another.

Why does Tangut component 011 show as a box?

A box usually means the font has no Tangut glyph for it.

The text can contain 𘠊 even when an app cannot draw it. Try a font with Tangut coverage, then check the receiving app too; apps can use different fonts.

Technical: it marks Tangut character analysis, indexing, or input.

The number is not a pronunciation or translation; read the whole Tangut character.

Why does 𘠊 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
