tangut component-021

Tangut component 021

21/768

𘠔 is a Tangut-script component, not a word with a fixed translation on its own. Tangut components help index complete characters and show how they are built in an Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS). The number 021 is a modern catalog label; alone, this character is usually a technical sample.

What 𘠔 means

It has no fixed word meaning on its own. Unicode assigns Tangut components structural roles rather than standalone meanings. 𘠔 can help index complete characters and describe their layout in an Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS), a notation that shows how an ideograph is built. The 021 is a modern catalog label; medieval writing used the piece inside complete characters. Sent alone, it is a technical or scholarly sample.

Why was the Tangut script created?

To write Tangut for the Western Xia state. The court promulgated the script in 1036. It was used for Buddhist writing and a written identity distinct from the Song; surviving works also include Chinese translations, primers, and other nonreligious texts.

Traditional accounts credit court official Yeli Renrong with its design. The script drew on Chinese writing’s visual and structural principles without simply copying Chinese characters, while neighboring Khitan states offered a precedent for state-backed script creation. These are links in the script’s history, not meanings for this individual component. The 021 label is modern: medieval writers used components within full characters, while modern Unicode makes them available for indexing and structural description.

Why does 𘠔 show as a box or split in code?

A box means missing font support; a split means broken text handling. A font or app without a Tangut Components glyph may show a box or fallback mark; that is a display problem, not another character. Fonts may draw the same encoded character differently, but a changed outline does not change its identity.

In UTF-16, 𘠔 is represented by two 16-bit code units, called a surrogate pair. Code that counts or cuts those units separately can split the character.

Technical and scholarly; it carries no conversational tone of its own.

Do not read it as a Tangut word by itself.

2

What does a box around 𘠔 mean?

Usually the font or app lacks a glyph for this Tangut component. The box marks missing display support, not a different character.

Can UTF-16 split 𘠔?

Yes. UTF-16 stores this character as two 16-bit code units. A cut between them leaves an unpaired surrogate, which some software may mishandle.
