Text symbol

What 𘡓 means

It is a part of a larger Tangut character, not a word-level reading.

A Tangut character is a complete written sign; a component is one of its recurring pieces. Scholars use components to index characters, describe how their parts fit together in an ideographic description sequence, and compare character forms.

The Tangut script was created around 1036 to write the Tangut language, used in the Western Xia state. Surviving texts include official, private, and religious works. A 2018 proposal places 𘡓 at position 04A604 in a historical component list.

How did its role change?

It moved from part of a writing system to a tool for analyzing that system.

During the Western Xia period, Tangut was used for administration, private writing, and religion. It continued through the Yuan and Ming dynasties, then became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. Modern dictionaries and digital standards use components to index and describe Tangut characters.

Tangut writing took Chinese writing as an important model, but it is a separate script. Component sets vary by scholar; a piece may be called a “radical” within one indexing scheme without having a stable Chinese meaning.

How do I type 𘡓?

Use a Tangut-capable input method, such as Rime with Xunpin.

As of 2026, the community Xunpin scheme for Rime documents Latin transcription, stroke input, four-corner input, and component selection for Tangut.

Typing and display are separate: even successful input appears as a missing-glyph square if the active font has no Tangut coverage.

Specialist and archival: it signals Tangut character analysis or an input/font check.

Treat it as a component label; the full Tangut character carries the word-level reading.

Why does 𘡓 show as a square?

Your font lacks a Tangut glyph for it. Input can succeed even when the selected font cannot draw the character; choose a font with Tangut coverage.
