tangut component-105

Tangut Component-105

105/768

𘡨 is a structural element used to index and describe full Tangut characters; the isolated sign has no word translation. The Tangut script served the Western Xia (Xixia) state in government and literature. If it appears as a square, the font may lack Tangut coverage.

What 𘡨 means

On its own, 𘡨 has no fixed word meaning.

Scholars use Tangut components to index, describe, and analyze complete characters. A component’s role depends on its structure within the full character; it has no separate dictionary gloss.

Does it work like a Chinese radical?

It can guide lookup, but its assigned role is structural.

Modern Tangut dictionaries use components to index characters, much as Chinese dictionaries use radicals. In Tangut, this assignment is for finding a character, not reading its meaning. There is no single standard Tangut component list; Unicode’s repertoire combines systems drawn from Tangut dictionaries. Scholars also compare Tangut script design with Chinese characters and Khitan writing, another historical script of the region.

The Tangut script was developed under the Western Xia state for administration and literature. Buddhist works were translated and printed in Tangut. The earliest transmitted Tangut document described in modern scholarship is dated 1072; inscriptions continued after the state fell.

Why does this Tangut symbol show as a square?

The font may lack Tangut coverage.

An empty square can appear when the active font does not support Tangut, even if the text contains the correct character. A Tangut-capable font can render it.

Technical and structural: a standalone component suits script study, character analysis, or dictionary lookup, not ordinary Tangut prose.

Do not read it as a complete Tangut word; it is one structural element.

Questions people ask

1

Can I combine Tangut components to make a character?

No. Putting component glyphs side by side does not compose a full Tangut character. A formal structural description can show how a character is built, but that description is not the character used as ordinary text.
