Tangut Component 136

136/768

𘢇 is a component in Tangut writing, so it does not mean a complete word on its own. If it shows as a box, the font probably lacks this glyph.

Text symbol

What 𘢇 means

It belongs inside a larger Tangut character, not a complete word.

Modern reference works use Tangut components to index characters, analyze their parts, and write Ideographic Description Sequences (IDS): short strings that show how a character is built. Within a full Tangut character, a component can suggest meaning or sound, or contribute only its shape.

The Tangut script, also called Xixia writing, was created in 1036 under the Western Xia state.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It let people write Tangut for government and Buddhist texts.

Tangut writing drew on Chinese writing practices. A Khitan-script influence has been proposed but remains disputed; neither broad historical connection makes 𘢇 a Chinese or Khitan character.

Tangut writing continued in Buddhist communities after the Western Xia state fell. A stone pillar from 1502 bearing a Buddhist dhāraṇī, a sacred formula, shows this later use; it does not give this component a standalone meaning.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘢇 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
