Tangut Component-134

134/768

𘢅 is a Tangut component used to organize the script’s larger characters; on its own, it is not a complete written word. A documented correction to its representative shape means older charts may show a different form of the same component.

What 𘢅 means

It is a reusable piece of Tangut writing.

Tangut components help dictionaries and researchers index, describe, and analyze larger Tangut characters. The meaning and reading belong to the completed written character around the component.

The Tangut script was created in 1036 under the Tangut emperor Li Yuanhao as part of Western Xia state-building. Its program included a Tangut Buddhist canon, a large collection of Buddhist scriptures. Tangut books also preserve translations of Chinese works, Confucian classics, encyclopedias, military writings, and literature.

Why does 𘢅 look different across charts?

A documented glyph correction changed its representative shape.

A 2019 Unicode technical note records Tangut component glyph corrections, including one for Component-134. The correction proposal compares it with other historical forms, including the easily confused Component-258 𘤁, whose first stroke slopes more sharply.

Where did Tangut writing come from?

Its creators drew on more than one writing tradition.

The Tangut creators followed the Khitan example of establishing a state script and drew on Chinese visual and compositional principles. Tangut writing did not simply derive from Chinese.

A manuscript from Khara-khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Dictionaries and researchers use component systems to index Tangut characters; Unicode brings together components documented in Chinese-, Japanese-, Russian-, and English-language publications.

Specialist and archival; it points to Tangut script analysis rather than everyday reading.

A lone component does not provide a word reading; interpret the completed Tangut character.

Usually, the font lacks Tangut Components coverage. Use a font that supports Tangut Components; a missing-glyph box is a display gap, not a different character.
