What 𘢊 means
𘢊 is a structural part of Tangut characters, not a whole word. Scholars use components to describe and index larger characters. Dictionaries can organize them differently, and this component alone gives no dependable word-for-word translation.
Why did Tangut writing begin?
It served Western Xia's state and cultural aims. Tangut writing was instituted under emperor Li Yuanhao in 1036 to support Western Xia. Its plans included a Tangut Buddhist canon, a collection of scriptures, and a separate written identity from Song China. The script drew on Chinese writing principles and followed the Khitan example of a distinct state script, though it was not simply derived from Chinese. A Tangut manuscript from Khara-Khoto, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, preserves Buddhist, Confucian, military, and literary works. Its later computer encoding marks digital standardization, not the script's beginning.
