Tangut Component 208

208/768

𘣏 is a structural part of Tangut characters, not a word with its own translation. Scholars use Tangut components to describe and find whole characters; the full character determines what this part contributes.

Text symbol

What 𘣏 means

It is an indexed part, not a self-contained gloss. Scholars use component labels to describe Tangut characters and find them in dictionaries. In some references, 𘣏 is “Tangut radical 208” or “R0208”; those are index labels, not words to pronounce or translate. A component can contribute meaning, sound, or structure inside a complete character.

Tangut writing was introduced to write the Tangut language in the Western Xia state around 1036. It remained in official, private, and religious texts after the dynasty fell, then became obsolete by the end of the Ming period.

Why can’t I translate 𘣏 by itself?

The containing character supplies the reading. A Tangut component may contribute to meaning, sound, or structure, so the component alone does not identify one reading. The mid-12th-century Sea of Characters, a Tangut dictionary, explains larger characters through the source characters of their parts; some explanations are circular or mnemonic. It helps explain how Tangut characters were analyzed, but it is not a shortcut to pronounce 𘣏.

Which characters use Tangut Component-208?

It can form a whole character or sit on the left. A 2010 Unicode Tangut proposal lists 𘣏 once as a complete five-stroke form and twice as a left-side element. That placement pattern does not mean the characters share a meaning or sound. Tangut dictionaries do not all divide characters using one universal component set.

Technical and historical: this label belongs to Tangut character study, not ordinary messages.

Do not read 208 as a gloss; the full Tangut character carries the reading.

Is 𘣏 Chinese or Tangut?

Tangut. 𘣏 is a component used to analyze Tangut characters. Its square form may look familiar from East Asian writing, but it belongs to the Tangut component system.

Why is 𘣏 showing as a box?

A missing-glyph box means your font or text renderer lacks Tangut coverage. The placeholder does not change the character in the text.
