Tangut Component-228

228/768

𘣣 is a Tangut component: a building block used to classify or describe larger characters, not a word with its own pronunciation or translation. Its role depends on the complete character around it. The number 228 is a catalog label, not a meaning.

Text symbol

What 𘣣 means

No; it has no standalone Tangut word reading.

It is a structural piece used to classify, analyze, and describe larger Tangut characters. It can also appear in an Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS), a notation that shows how a character is arranged. The full character supplies the reading; 𘣣 by itself does not.

Unlike many Chinese radicals, whose meaning can help classify a character, Tangut components do not each carry one fixed meaning or sound across the script. A 12th century analysis tradition called the Sea of Characters explained components through source characters: a source could contribute meaning or sound, and the relevant source could vary between full characters. Identify the complete character before assigning a translation.

Why does Tangut have components?

They help readers classify, describe, and study full characters.

Tangut Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the script’s creation in 1036 for state-building. Its design drew on Chinese writing principles and followed the example of Khitan state scripts. A written Tangut language also supported a Buddhist canon and a distinct political identity.

𘣣 appears in a woodblock-printed Tangut wordbook, Homonyms, with regular-script and cursive samples. Its compiler drew on a Synonyms text whose colophon is dated 1188, placing the wordbook later; its own date and provenance are uncertain. This record shows the component’s documentary role in a component list. Today, component lists help scholars index and describe characters.

What does 𘣣 mean when someone sends it alone?

It identifies a structural sample, not a complete word.

Ask for the full Tangut character or the reference being quoted; the intended reading belongs to the whole character.

Technical and scholarly: using it signals Tangut-script study, character indexing, structural analysis, or font testing.

The 228 is a catalog number, not a word meaning.
