tangut component-229

Tangut Component 229

229/768

𘣤 is a Tangut component used to analyze and index complete Tangut characters, not a word with its own translation. In a dictionary, it helps group entries by character structure. A blank box points to missing font support; different stroke forms can reflect a documented correction.

What 𘣤 means

It helps scholars analyze and index complete Tangut characters. A Tangut component is a structural piece used to study how full characters are built; its place in that structure does not give it a translation.

Tangut scholar Li Fanwen’s dictionary files this shape as Tangut radical 229 and groups a small set of full-character entries under it. That is its practical filing role for researchers.

Is Tangut Component-229 a word?

No; this structural piece has no standalone translation. Full Tangut characters can combine several components, which are classified by their role in a character. This one should not be read as a word naming an object.

Some dictionaries call an indexing component a radical. Unicode notes that Tangut components have no single standard classification, and shortened character forms can make radical assignments difficult. Here, radical means a dictionary heading, not a guaranteed meaning.

When and why was the Tangut script created?

It was commissioned in 1036 for Western Xia state-building. Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered a native script for the kingdom. One major goal was a Tangut-language collection of Buddhist scriptures. The script helped distinguish Western Xia alongside Song China; it followed a precedent set by the Khitan and Chinese visual principles without becoming Chinese writing.

Manuscripts from Khara-khoto, an archaeological site in Inner Mongolia, preserve Buddhist works and Tangut translations of Chinese Confucian, military, encyclopedic and literary texts. The script remained in use after Western Xia fell in 1227: later Buddhist materials linked to printing and religious life under the succeeding Yuan dynasty show that it outlasted the state.

Scholarly and archival: useful for Tangut character analysis, dictionary filing, or font testing.

Do not treat it as a translated Tangut word.

Why does Tangut Component-229 look different?

A Unicode correction proposal from 2020 documents an earlier five-stroke design and a corrected four-stroke form in Unicode 13.0. Charts and fonts based on different Unicode revisions may show different strokes. Compare the encoded character, not stroke appearance alone.

How do I type it?
If your editor supports hexadecimal Unicode input, enter 188E4; otherwise use a character map with Tangut coverage. This supplementary-plane character takes four bytes in UTF-8, so older byte-limited software can fail.
Tangut font support
The font must include Tangut component glyphs. Without that coverage, 𘣤 may appear as a blank box; that is a display gap, not a different character.
