What 𘤉 means
A structural stroke, not a word.
Scholars use it to describe and index Tangut characters. “266” is an index label, not a gloss.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It gave Western Xia a writing system of its own.
Li Yuanhao ordered it to set Western Xia apart from Song China. Chinese writing influenced Tangut forms, but Tangut was a separate script. Its creation followed the neighboring Khitan state’s example of creating its own scripts. Tangut texts included secular works translated from Chinese.
