tangut component-354

Tangut component 354

𘥡 is one structural part used to describe or look up Tangut characters; by itself, it is not a Tangut word with a translation. You’ll meet it in scholarly indexing and digital text work. A box or a changed drawing usually points to font support or design, not a new meaning.

What 𘥡 means

It is a Tangut character component, not a word by itself.

Tangut, also called Xixia, is a writing system once used for the Tangut language. This component helps scholars describe whole characters or find them in dictionaries; alone, it has no word-level translation.

In Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary, “Radical 354” is a filing label. Tangut indexes differ, so that number is an address in one system, not a Tangut reading.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It helped Western Xia build a distinct written culture.

Created around 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao of the Tangut-led Western Xia state, Tangut script supported state-building and a Tangut edition of the Buddhist Canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures. A manuscript found at Khara-khoto, a ruined settlement in present-day Inner Mongolia, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century.

Tangut books included Buddhist texts, translations of Chinese classics, encyclopedias, military works, and literature. Tangut leaders followed the example of their Khitan neighbors, whose scripts appeared about a century earlier. Tangut writing was visually and compositionally inspired by Chinese writing, but it did not derive from Chinese. After Western Xia fell, the script continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties before becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming. Scholars rediscovered Tangut in the late 19th century; its components then became tools for indexing and analyzing complete characters.

How can I type 𘥡?

A Unicode-aware picker or a shape-based Tangut lookup can locate it.

Use a character picker that searches by Unicode name or code point; ordinary keyboards do not have a dedicated key for this component.

Documented Tangut input tools have used four-corner numbering, a lookup code built from a character’s shape. An empty box means the selected font lacks a glyph. Tangut sources also preserve variant shapes, so a different drawing does not always mean a different encoded character.

Specialist and research-oriented: it points to Tangut character structure, dictionary indexing, or font testing.

Don’t read it as a translated Tangut word when it appears alone.

Why does 𘥡 appear as an empty box?

It is usually a font-coverage problem: the selected font lacks a glyph for this Tangut component. The text still carries the same character.
