What 𘦊 means
It is a structural part, not a standalone word. Tangut radical indexes group complete characters under their component parts; Unicode components also help scholars describe and analyze character structure. A study of the medieval teaching text Homonyms lists 𘦊 to the left of sample character 𗋚. That placement connects it to a complete sign, not a separate translation.
The Tangut (Xixia) script was introduced in 1036 under Li Yuanhao as part of state-building and to support a Tangut Buddhist canon. Its design was inspired visually and structurally by Chinese writing, though it was not derived from Chinese; Tangut books also included translations of Chinese works.
Why is 𘦊 a character if it is only a part?
Unicode gives each encoded component its own character identity. A Tangut teaching manuscript calls its small signs “letters” and “mothers of written characters”—parts from which whole characters are built. An end note dated 1188 in the related Synonyms text places Homonyms later than that. Today, Unicode also permits components in Tangut Ideographic Description Sequences (IDS), a notation that records a character’s parts and layout.
Specialist and neutral: it belongs in Tangut dictionaries, character analysis, and Unicode descriptions.
Do not assign 𘦊 a complete Tangut word or reading by itself.
