Tangut Component 528

528/768

In Tangut writing, 𘨏 serves as an indexing component for complete characters; it is not a word with a set translation. Components may signal meaning or sound, but a full character carries its reading. The script was created for the Tangut language of the Xixia kingdom.

What 𘨏 means

It is a Tangut indexing component, not a standalone word.

Some Tangut components signal meaning, while others signal sound. They act as clues within a larger character, so an index entry under 𘨏 cannot tell you the full character's reading.

Tangut writing was created for the Tangut language of the Xixia kingdom, in what is now northwestern China, and served administration, official records, and translated works. Historical accounts place the script’s creation in 1036–1037; its earliest transmitted document is an official record from 1072. It remained in use after the kingdom fell in 1227, and the last known Tangut inscription dates to 1502. The script drew on Chinese writing traditions; scholars compare its structure with Khitan Small Script, another regional writing system.

Technical: this component belongs in descriptions or indexes of Tangut writing.

Read the whole Tangut character; 𘨏 has no standalone translation.
