Tangut Component 529

529/768

𘨐 is a structural piece in Tangut writing, not a word with its own translation. It helps index or describe larger Tangut characters. The script was introduced for the Western Xia state in 1036; “529” is only a catalog label.

What 𘨐 means

It is a structural component, not a standalone Tangut word.

A component is a piece used to locate or describe a larger character. In the Tangut component block, 529 labels a lookup entry, not a translation. Unicode treats components as structural aids for indexing and analysis, not semantic signs.

The Tangut script was officially introduced in 1036 for the Western Xia state, to write the Tangut language. It served Buddhist texts, education, Chinese translations, and other official and literary writing. Its shapes drew on Chinese regular script, a standardized style of Chinese characters. After Western Xia fell, inscriptions and texts kept Tangut in use into the mid-Ming period, before it faded from ordinary use.

Why use 𘨐 in an ideographic description?

It helps describe how pieces of a Tangut character fit together.

An Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS) is a compact formula showing how character pieces are arranged, such as side by side or one above another. In an IDS, 𘨐 is one operand—a piece in the formula—not the complete historical character.

The Unicode component block gathers entries from several dictionaries and publications rather than following one standard component list. Use the decomposition documented by the source you are reading; visual resemblance alone does not identify its component system.

Why does 𘨐 look different in fonts?

The code point stays fixed; fonts supply the drawing.

Digital Tangut typefaces can adapt forms from manuscripts and inscriptions, so outlines may differ. A font without Tangut coverage may show no glyph or a replacement box. A different drawing reflects font design or coverage, not a different character.

Specialist use: Tangut character indexing, structural analysis, Unicode data, or font work.

The number 529 labels the component; it is not its translation.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘨐 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
