tangut component-592

Tangut component 592

592/768

𘩏 is a Tangut component used to describe and index complete ideographs; it does not stand for a word by itself. In a Tangut IDS (ideographic description sequence), it marks part of a full character. Tangut sources also preserve more than one written form, so lower strokes may differ between references.

What 𘩏 means

It labels a part inside a larger Tangut character. Within a Tangut IDS (ideographic description sequence), 𘩏 helps show how a complete ideograph is built. Scholars also use it in component-based dictionary indexing. It labels structure, not a word’s pronunciation or translation.

Tangut script was created in 1036 under Li Yuanhao, ruler of Western Xia (Xixia), for state-building and a Buddhist canon. It drew on Chinese design principles without deriving from Chinese, and followed the earlier Khitan script, another regional writing system. Tangut writing later carried Buddhist scriptures and translations of Chinese works on government, ethics, war, and literature. A surviving Khara-khoto manuscript is thought to date to the 12th or early 13th century.

Why do Tangut references show different forms?

Historical references record more than one form. A 2020 Unicode working paper compares 𘩏 in two major Tangut reference works and records variants, including differences in the lower strokes. It does not establish one correct form for every occurrence, so examples from separate references may not match.

The variation concerns how the component was written, not a second meaning. The same 2020 paper lists it beside nine full ideographs affected by form corrections. Scholars use different component inventories, so this is a tool for analyzing Tangut writing rather than one universal set of basic signs.

Technical and scholarly; in a message, it reads like a character reference or a glyph test.

Alone, it can look like a broken font or accidental paste; add context if you send it.

Why does 𘩏 show as a box?

A box usually means the active font lacks Tangut Components coverage. Use a font that includes Tangut script; the box is a display fallback, not a replacement character.

Does 𘩏 have a pronunciation?

No. In IDS notation it labels structure, so it does not provide the pronunciation of the complete Tangut ideograph.
