What 𘩜 means

It has no standalone translation. This structural piece is used to index and describe complete Tangut characters. A component's role depends on the whole character: the same graphic element can contribute to meaning or sound in one character and play another role in a different one. Interpret the full character, not 𘩜 by itself.

The Tangut script was devised around 1036 on the orders of Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao, as part of building an independent state and preparing a Tangut version of Buddhist scripture. The earliest securely dated document, the Guazhou trial record, dates to 1069 or 1070. Buddhist inscriptions show Tangut writing in use as late as 1502, long after Western Xia fell.

Tangut is a distinct character-based script whose squared forms and component-built structure were influenced by Chinese and Khitan writing traditions. Modern Tangut dictionaries divide characters into components in different ways; Unicode brought together components used in several scholarly systems. Components can also appear in an Ideographic Description Sequence, a written outline showing how a character's parts are arranged.

Why does this Tangut glyph show as a box?

Font support determines whether it appears. As of 2026, a phone or app needs a font that covers Tangut components to display 𘩜; without one, it may show a missing-glyph box. Different fonts can draw the character in different styles.

As of 2026, specialized Tangut input tools offer stroke-code, reverse-lookup, handwriting, or code entry. A normal Latin keyboard has no dedicated key for 𘩜; a Tangut input method is the practical route for repeated entry.

Technical and archival: it belongs in Tangut character indexing, structural descriptions, and font testing.

𘩜 alone is not a word-level translation; interpret the complete Tangut character.
