Tangut Component 617

617/768

What 𘩨 means

It is a cataloged part used to analyze larger Tangut characters.

Tangut is a historical writing system; its components are structural pieces used to index or describe full characters. “Tangut radical” is another label for this kind of index entry, but 617 is a catalog number, not a gloss or pronunciation.

Tangut script was disseminated in 1036 under Li Yuanhao, ruler of Western Xia; accounts differ on who devised it. Tangut writing continued in smaller communities after Western Xia fell in 1227. These dates belong to the script’s history, not the first appearance of this inventory entry. A Chinese radical is a useful analogy because it helps organize Chinese characters, but Tangut dictionaries used their own, sometimes competing, component systems. In the dictionary known as the Sea of Characters, a component’s meaning-related or sound-related role depends on the larger character containing it.

Why does 𘩨 show as a box?

Your font may not include a Tangut glyph for it.

A font with Tangut coverage can display this character; when none is available, the app or operating system may show a box or fallback symbol. That changes the display, not the identity of the character identified by 18A68.

A specialist building block for indexing and analyzing Tangut characters; it has no fixed word meaning by itself.

Do not read 617 as a translation; it is an inventory label.

Why does 𘩨 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
