Tangut Component-668

668/768

𘪛 is a Tangut (Xixia) component used to analyze larger characters, not a word with its own translation. It is mainly useful in dictionaries, character research, Unicode work, and Tangut input methods. The number 668 is a catalog label; the component’s role depends on the larger character being analyzed.

Text symbol

What 𘪛 means

No. It is one part used to analyze larger characters.

The number 668 is a catalog label, not a pronunciation or translation. Tangut component lists help dictionaries describe and index larger characters, but different dictionaries may divide them into components differently.

So 𘪛 has no fixed standalone reading: its role is understood through the larger character’s analysis.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It supported Western Xia’s state and written culture.

Around 1036, the first Western Xia emperor ordered the Tangut script as part of building the state. It drew on Chinese writing principles, and the rulers also looked to the neighboring Khitan state’s example of creating its own script, without simply adopting Chinese writing.

A major purpose was a Tangut Buddhist canon, a collection of sacred Buddhist texts. Surviving books also cover government, Confucian teaching, military affairs, encyclopedias, and literature. Tangut writing continued into the Yuan and Ming dynasties before falling out of use.

What does 𘪛 do inside a larger character?

Its role depends on the character being analyzed.

A larger Tangut character may be analyzed as a combination of parts that point to meaning or sound. The same component can play a different role in another analysis, and its drawn form can change with position.

That is why 𘪛 is most useful alongside the larger character or its dictionary analysis.

As a message, 𘪛 reads as technical or archival: the sender is discussing Tangut structure, fonts, or encoding.

668 is a catalog number, not the glyph’s pronunciation.

Drift: A 2014 proposal called this glyph “Tangut Radical-412”; the adopted repertoire calls it “Tangut Component-668” within a broader component-and-radical system.
