What 𗀡 means

The Tangut verb means “to be licentious”: to act in a sexually improper or unrestrained way.

The word appears in two 12th century Tangut dictionaries, Sea of Writing and Homophones.

Why was the Tangut script made?

It gave the Western Xia state a way to write Tangut.

The Western Xia court designated the script for government use in 1036. It gave Tangut, the state's language, a written form for administration, literature, and Buddhist translations. Its design drew on Chinese writing traditions while remaining a distinct script; Xixia is another name for Western Xia.

An early transmitted Tangut document identified in scholarship is an official order to a military inspector dated 1072; it shows the script in use, not this character's first appearance. The character is cited in 12th century dictionaries, and later Tangut inscriptions dated 1345, 1348, and 1502 show written use after Western Xia fell. Khitan and Jurchen scripts belong to neighboring histories; they are comparisons, not documented relatives of 𗀡.

What does it mean when someone sends 𗀡?

Tangut readers can recognize the verb; intent still depends on context.

The word names sexually improper or unrestrained behavior, so it can sound like an accusation if aimed at someone. A reader who does not know Tangut cannot identify that reading from the glyph alone. If it arrived without a sentence around it, ask what the sender intended.

Morally charged: the Tangut verb names sexually improper behavior, so it can read as an accusation when directed at a person.

Don't send it as a joke at someone unless you mean that charged word.
