What 𗁱 means
Its exact word value depends on the surrounding Tangut text.
𗁱 is a character in the writing system used by the Western Xia state, also called Xixia. The label assigned to it identifies the character, not its translation. In a document, neighboring characters and a Tangut dictionary help recover its reading; alone, it leaves too little context for a reliable translation.
How did Tangut writing develop?
It was created in 1036–1037 for Western Xia state records and translations.
The earliest surviving Tangut document is an official message dated 1072. Tangut's development is linked to Chinese-character writing; scholarship also discusses influences from Khitan, Tibetan, and Uyghur writing traditions.
After the Western Xia state fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued; an inscription dated 1502 shows later use. These milestones date the script, not the first appearance of 𗁱.
