Tangut Ideograph 170B6

183/6136

𗂶 is a Tangut character whose exact English meaning is unsettled; a proposed link to a word meaning “to sew” is an etymology, not a confirmed translation. The Tangut script was used in Western Xia for Buddhist, administrative, and literary texts.

What 𗂶 means

Its exact English gloss is unsettled.

The surviving lexicographic reference gives 𗂶 a reconstructed Tangut reading, transcribed as “rər,” and links it to a reconstructed Proto-Sino-Tibetan root meaning “to sew.” That etymology is a proposal, not a confirmed translation for this character. As of 2026, the public entry still marks its English definition as needing translation.

A 12th-century entry in Wenhai (“Sea of Writing”), a Tangut dictionary, records the character. This attests to its use by then, not to when it first appeared.

What was Tangut writing used for?

The Tangut script was commissioned in 1036 under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao. Its early purposes included state administration and a Buddhist canon in Tangut; it also carried translations of Chinese Confucian, military, and literary works.

The earliest transmitted Tangut document discussed by scholars dates to 1072, and a 1502 inscription shows the script remained in use after Western Xia fell. Tangut writing drew on Chinese character traditions and developed in a region where neighboring peoples such as the Khitan also created scripts. These are connections between writing traditions, not evidence that 𗂶 is an alternate form or direct ancestor of another character. Its later Unicode encoding date records digital standardization, not the sign’s historical origin.

Why does 𗂶 show as a box?

The font may lack Tangut glyph coverage.

Unicode identifies the character, but the device or app also needs a font that contains its outline. A blank square is a display failure, not a different reading; a Tangut-capable font is needed to inspect its shape.

As of 2026, no standard emotional use is established for this glyph; alone, it reads as a reference to Tangut writing.

If you send it alone, add context; the glyph gives no reliable emotional cue.
