What 𗃙 means
𗃙 is a Tangut character; 170D9 is an identifier, not its meaning. Tangut was the language of Western Xia, a state in northwestern China; Tangut script was the separate writing system used for it. The script was modeled on Chinese writing, but the resemblance does not make a Tangut character Chinese or supply a Chinese reading.
In 1036, the Western Xia court established Tangut writing for official use. It served administration and literature while giving the dynasty a distinct written identity. This belonged to a regional pattern: the Liao and Jin states also developed Khitan and Jurchen scripts.
The writing tradition continued through 1502. A 1345 monument at Juyong Pass preserves Tangut writing, and manuscripts and dictionaries found at Khara-Khoto in 1909 advanced modern study of the script. These are milestones in Tangut writing, not dates for this individual character's origin.
How do I type 𗃙?
Use a Tangut input method; ordinary keyboard layouts lack Tangut keys. The web Tangut IME described in 2025 offers reverse lookup, handwriting and code entry. Code entry requires loading its dictionary, then selecting a candidate.
A character can remain valid text even when an app lacks a Tangut font to draw it. In the 2025 web IME, Noto Serif Tangut and Yinchuan Beta show different styles; a mobile app without Tangut support may show a blank box.
