What 𗃟 means

As of 2026, a Tangut reference entry leaves its English definition blank. It records reconstructed pronunciations, but a reconstructed sound is not a translation; the Unicode label identifies this character, not the word’s gloss.

The exact character appears in Tangut reference works from the 12th century, including the Sea of Writing and Homophones. These are dictionaries: one organizes entries by sound, and the other groups words with similar readings. Font support controls the outline on screen; a missing glyph can appear as a box without changing the stored character.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It was built for the Western Xia state. A court-ordered project began in 1036 under Li Yuanhao, with the scholar Yeli Renrong associated with its creation. Tangut gave the state a script for government and schools and marked cultural independence among its neighbors.

By the 12th century, Tangut books included Buddhist translations, dictionaries, law codes, and Chinese classics. The script outlasted Western Xia’s fall in 1227: Buddhist texts continued after the state collapsed, and, as of 2026, the latest dated Tangut text known is from 1502. Khitan and Jurchen courts also sponsored distinct script projects; these are regional parallels, not forms of Tangut.

Someone sent me 𗃟—what does it mean?

Treat it as a Tangut text sample that needs context.

If you do not read Tangut, the glyph alone cannot show how its word fits the sentence. Ask for the surrounding line or a translation before guessing at tone or intent.

Historical and specialist; its clearest context is Tangut writing or historical study.

Without a Tangut sentence or English gloss, don’t guess the word’s meaning from the shape.
