What 𗃷 means
Tangut dictionaries gloss it as “servant.”
It is a word, and scholars reconstruct its sound differently. Created around 1036 for Western Xia, a state in northwest China, the Tangut script served official records, translations, Buddhist texts, and a distinct written identity for the state. Khitan was another state script in the region; whether it influenced Tangut is debated. The earliest surviving example is an official document from 1072. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; an inscription from 1502 is among the later examples.
Historical Tangut sources preserve variant forms. Unicode groups forms judged not to mark a difference in meaning, so fonts may draw 𗃷 differently without changing which character it is.
