Text symbol

What 𗃼 means

It names an insect in Tangut.

The Wénhǎi, a Tangut dictionary, records it at entry 33.272 in the 12th century. Its broad gloss names no species. In Tangut dictionaries, 𘠈 is an indexing component for 𗃼; it helps locate the entry, not add meaning.

The Tangut script spread in 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao for Xixia (Western Xia) state affairs and Buddhist texts. Accounts differ on whether Li’s father or cultural adviser created it. After Xixia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued into the Ming period and later dictionaries and fonts.

Historical register: a character from the Tangut lexicon.

Without a font that supports Tangut, 𗃼 may appear as an empty box.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗃼 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
