What 𗄃 means
𗄃 is a Tangut character with a scholarly reconstructed reading.
A Tangut lexicon gives its reconstructed reading in scholarly transcription as tśjwow¹ and identifies it as a Tangut transcription of the Chinese character 章 as read in Middle Chinese, an earlier form of Chinese.
The Unicode name is a code-based label, not a translation of the historical character.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It served the Western Xia state and the Tangut language.
The Western Xia state established the Tangut script, also called the Xixia script, around 1036 under ruler Li Yuanhao for administration and cultural life, including Buddhist writing. An official document from 1072 is among the earliest surviving examples. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; inscriptions dated as late as 1502 show it remained in use after the state ended.
Tangut forms were visually modeled on Chinese writing, but the scripts are distinct. A direct influence from neighboring Khitan writing remains debated.
How should I read 𗄃 in a message?
Read it as Tangut text and ask for its context.
Sent alone, it has no dependable everyday English paraphrase; a reader needs the Tangut word or passage it came from.
