Tangut character 1710D

270/6136

𗄍 is a Tangut character linked to a reading in Middle Chinese 長. In a modern message, context has to tell you whether it refers to Tangut writing, history, or a font sample. The same character may look different in Tangut fonts, and a font without Tangut coverage may show a box.

Text symbol

What 𗄍 means

It is a Tangut sign linked to a historical Chinese reading.

A transliteration represents a sound using a different writing system. Tangut dictionary material links this sign's reconstructed reading to 長 in Middle Chinese, a historical form of Chinese. That is a reading relationship, not a claim that 𗄍 is a Chinese character.

The Tangut script was ordered into use in 1036 to support the Western Xia state's institutions, production of a Buddhist canon (a collection of scriptures), and cultural independence from Song-dynasty China. It took inspiration from Chinese writing but remained a separate script. The Tangut court also followed neighboring Khitan states, whose rulers had created official scripts. Tangut books carried Buddhist scriptures and translations of Chinese and Tibetan works, as well as Confucian, military, and literary texts.

A Tangut manuscript from the ruins of Khara-Khoto, a medieval city, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. It shows the script in documentary use.

Why does 𗄍 look different or show as a box?

Font support controls the drawing; some fonts lack Tangut coverage.

Unicode's reference glyph is not a required design, so Tangut fonts can draw the same encoded character differently. A font without Tangut coverage may show a missing-glyph box; that is a display problem, not another character.

What does 𗄍 mean in a message?

It points to Tangut material; context gives the specific purpose.

A message about a Tangut text, dictionary entry, or font sample gives the sign a clear job. Sent alone, it could be a historical reference or a display test; ask for the surrounding text or a gloss.

Specialist and archival: it belongs in Tangut material, historical-script study, or font discussions.

Why does 𗄍 show as a box?

It is a font-coverage problem. Use a font that supports Tangut; Unicode's reference drawing does not require every font to include this character.
