Tangut character 𗅻

380/6136

𗅻 is a Tangut character from the Western Xia writing tradition, but it has no secure English gloss as of 2026. The Tangut script served state administration and Buddhist writing; a standalone modern send is best read as a script reference or font check. If it appears as a box, your font probably lacks Tangut support.

What 𗅻 means

The exact gloss needs context that a lone glyph cannot supply.

A Tangut dictionary gives a scholarly reconstruction of 𗅻’s sound. That estimate describes how the written word may have been pronounced, not what it means in English. Tangut characters can represent words or meaningful parts of words, so surrounding text is essential to interpret this one.

When was Tangut writing created?

The History of Song gives 1036 as the script’s design date.

The History of Song credits official Yeli Renrong with designing the script for the Tangut language and Western Xia institutions. Government schools taught it, and state documents used it; some diplomatic writing paired it with Chinese.

After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued in Buddhist translations, printed scriptures, and religious inscriptions. Two stone pillars at Baoding, inscribed with Buddhist dhāraṇī (sacred formulas), were erected in 1502; they show the script outlived the state.

What does 𗅻 mean when someone sends it?

A one-character send is best read as a Tangut reference or font check.

The sender may be showing the script, testing font support, or asking you to identify it; the glyph alone does not tell you which. If they expect a translation, ask for the surrounding Tangut text.

If it appears as an empty box, your font probably lacks Tangut coverage. A Tangut-capable font displays the character, though its drawing may vary by font.

Historical and specialist; its tone comes from the surrounding text, not this character alone.

A Chinese-looking form is not a Chinese reading.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 𗅻 look wrong?

Usually a font issue. If it appears as a box, the current font lacks Tangut coverage; a Tangut-capable font can display it. Different fonts may draw the same character differently.

Can I read 𗅻 as Chinese?

No. Tangut is a separate writing system for the Tangut language; a square, Chinese-like shape does not make 𗅻 a Chinese character or give it a Chinese reading.
